Wisconsin Trip Day #1:

Jimmy needed to pick up the chiller for his telescope instrument at the instrument’s original home in Madison, Wisconsin. He needed to drive out, since it’s a fairly decent size hunk of machinery. He asked me to go with him, and I said “hell yeah!”….actually, I said “only if the new cats are getting along with the others”. The cats were getting along much better than expected, and this was a chance to complete a DZP…so I went along. So, Thursday we left for Madison, Wisconsin to pick up the chiller from the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s observatory.

Wednesday evening, Jimmy & I didn’t manage to go to bed until 3am do to vehicle and packing preparations. So, Thursday we didn’t get up until 9:30am. We packed up and headed out with our first destination being my lab. I had some experiments I needed to stick in the fridge & freezer before we left- which only took a few moments. Next, it was to Jimmy’s department to meet with a couple people (in relation to the trip), then we had to run back home and grab the tarp that we forgot, then to the gas station, and finally we were on the road out of Toledo at about 12:30pm.

We stopped twice on the way, once to eat lunch and once for a bathroom/stretch our legs break. We arrived at approximately 7:10pm (6:10pm Madison time). We stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn in Middleton, which is on the west side of Madison. Or hotel was wonderful. It was newer, clean, very friendly staff, etc…I had no complaints. They didn’t have a lot in the way of extra amenities, but this was a business trip not a vacation. To me, the most important thing is cleaniness….bed bugs scare the CRAP out of me. And this hotel didn’t have a speck of dirt, so it was good with me. It backed right up to this lovely shopping center, with plenty of places to eat, so that was very nice.

The first thing I noticed when we got there, was that I had underestimated the cold and should have dressed warmer, lol. Thursday night was in the teens, and windy. Blek. We checked in, got settled into our room, and then went in search of some food. We ate next door in the shopping plaza at a place called “Boston’s”. We were disappointed to discover that the decor, theme and food of the restaurant had nothing to do with the actual city. Still, our appetizer “Catcus Cuts” was awesome…handcut potato chips with a spicy dip that was delicious, and our entree a buffalo chicken pizza was also good. The pizza didn’t come with or have any blu cheese which we thought was extremely odd. We got a Boston Creme pie to go (the only thing “Boston” in the place).

We went back to the hotel so I could watch my Thursday night shows….Hell’s Kitchen & Eleventh Hour, and ate our pie. Then went to bed at a decent time so we could get up early to go to the observatory the following day.

Day 2 & 3 to follow.
